Novelist Paul Sheldon (James Caan) crashes his car on a snowy New England road. He wakes up with massive injuries to his legs in the home of Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates). Luckily, Annie is a registered nurse and has managed to splint his mangled legs and has enough medical supplies to ease his pain until the weather clears. Annie is delighted to learn that Paul is the novelist responsible for a series of romantic novels. Annie’s adoration soon shows itself to be an insane obsession with the fantasy world of Misery Chastain, the heroine of Paul’s novels. Paul’s very survival is jeopardized as the two become locked in a contest of wits and wills, pitting the physically incapacitated Sheldon against the mentally imbalanced Annie in this adaptation of Stephen King’s novel.
