Lucy Kaplansky
New York City singer/songwriter Lucy Kaplansky’s new record Over the Hills is her most personal recording to date, with songs that are not only a reflection upon her times but that connect to universal themes of love, joy, loss, and dreams for the future. Kaplansky, a veteran of Mountain Stage, has twice won the Association for Independent Music award for Best Pop Album of the Year and her story has been featured in two books about women singer/songwriters. The New Yorker calls Kaplansky a “truly gifted performer with a bag full of enchanting songs.” Her new record is a shining example.

Rory Block
Rory Block has been hailed as one of the “great acoustic blues guitarists and musical preservationists of her generation.” She has committed her life to preserving the Delta blues tradition, now bringing it to life for 21st century audiences. Growing up in a bohemian New York environment taught Block to appreciate the musings of Bob Dylan and Mississippi John Hurt, and by the time she was ten, she had already picked up the guitar. Now, Block wields a fiery and haunting guitar and vocal style all her own. She is redefining the boundaries of acoustic blues and folk. Her trademark finger picking and slide guitar style is prevalent on her latest releases, From the Dust and The Lady and Mr. Johnson.

The Hillbilly Gypsies
Native West Virginians The Hillbilly Gypsies specialize in their own homegrown style of Appalachian old time music, mixed with a hard-drivin’ bluegrass sound. Performing around a single vintage style diaphragm microphone, the Gypsies are known for their jamming and barn party energy. Their latest record, Come On In, features 22 songs—some original, some old favorites—and showcases the exciting bluegrass and old-time style that made them popular.

Sara Hickman
Sara Hickman started her career early. She wrote and performed her first song at age eight and hasn’t stopped since. In fact, Hickman has her own little empire that encompasses writing and recording music (for adults, children and the world); public speaking; painting; writing stories, poems and essays; and even a heavy involvement with community issues and volunteer work. Hickman’s newest release, Motherlode, is a two-disc set of 20 songs. Each disc speaks to a different mood. Disc one contains songs of universal woe and quiet lament in conjunction with womankind, while disc two captures a woman’s heart, bright and sparkling with hope, joy and love.
